Our Story

a trusted family business starting from humble beginnings…

1979

After running a manufacturing division for Ernest Jones, Doug Newman Snr with wife Sue Newman open their first Gold Arts Jewellery store in Brighton’s iconic South Lanes.

1985

With business expanding, the Newmans move to a bigger store in The Lanes which has a pawnbroking licence and book of customers. GA Pawnbrokers and Jewellers is born.

1992

Doug Snr opens a second GA Pawnbrokers and Jewellers store in George Street, Hove.

1994

To keep up with growing demand, a third store opens in Trafalgar Street, Brighton. This branch has since changed location twice, moving to York Place in 1997 and finally London Road in 2014.

1996

–Doug Snr and son, Timothy Newman, open a fourth store in Eastbourne.

2004

With reputation across Sussex expanding, a fifth GA Jewellers and Pawnbrokers opens in Queens Road, Hastings.

2012

A sixth store opens in Montague Street, Worthing.

2014

GA Pawnbrokers buy both Worthing Cashbrokers and Hepinstalls Pawnbrokers pawn books to expand the Worthing branch.

2020

Flagship store in Brighton relocates to 8 Brighton Place, becoming a dedicated pawnbrokers and watch dealers.

Doug Newman Snr has always believed in treating staff and customers with the highest respect, which is probably why so many of his employees have been on this journey with him for over 20 years and counting…

Since opening his first store 1979, Doug Senior’s enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit has passed to his children who all play vital roles in the continued success of GA Pawnbrokers and Jewellers.
